proclamation of Rome as the capital of Italy.
The capital of the Kingdom of Italy was first Turin when Italy was unified in 1861, then it was the city of Florence in 1865 which was given this role, Italy being unified as a State, with with the exception of Lazio still controlled by the Pope. Rome did not become the final capital of the kingdom until 1871 after the conquest of Lazio and the Pope took refuge in the Vatican1. The choice of Rome was made by its central position within the new State, and by the historical and cultural role of the Eternal City within the peninsula, in particular at the time of Roman Italy.
